Assignment 3
One of themes that run through the articles in the readings on globalization taken from The Economist is that an open economy promotes trade, which has benefits. The greater volume of trade in itself is a benefit. As well, globalization creates opportunities for wider markets and new industries. Even so, the articles acknowledge that some industries and some workers are disadvantages by globalization. The challenge for governments is to allow businesses to take advantage of open economies and globalization while lessening the negative effects.
How do you think globalization will affect the industry in which you hope to work? Will an open economy without trade barriers give your industry new opportunities? If so, what are they? If an open economy with a global reach will make it more difficult for your industry, what challenges will it face? Will globalization favour the development of your industry in certain countries as opposed to others?
If you wish to do further research, you may do so, but you do not have to do so. The point of the essay is to get you to think about the effects of globalization and an open economy free of trade barriers on a particular industry. As an example, consider the effect of globalization on a profession like accounting. How will globalization affect the licensing of accountants? How will it affect the enforcement of professional standards in the profession? How will large, full-service accounting firms make out in a world open to competition?
So think about what globalization really means for the industry in which you want to work. In assignment 2 you considered your own career; now consider instead the industry itself and the challenges it faces.
The paper should be between 3 and 5 pages long, double spaced. It must be handed in through Blackboard by the end of the day on Dec. 2, 2016. You may talk with your friends about the assignment, but you must write your own essay. Do not copy from your friends or from another source. Take the opportunity to present your own thoughts.
Your essay will be marked on the following criteria:
Unity (20 marks)
Is there an overall theme or related group of themes?
Does each paragraph develop one theme, adding something new to the argument?
Coherence (20 marks)
Does one paragraph lead to the next, advancing the argument?
Are sentences linked so that the reader is led along through the argument?
Grammar and Diction (10 marks)
Is the grammar correct?
Is the choice of words appropriate?
Is the writing clear and straightforward?
Thought and content (50 marks)
Is the paper thoughtful – has the writer presented reasonable speculations about the effect of globalization and open economies on the industry?
Is the paper persuasive? Does the writer make a good case for the conclusions? Does the writer support the conclusions with some good reasons? Is there any data to back up the argument? Does the writer work from an analysis of the current situation in the industry? Does the writer take that analysis and combine it with conclusions about globalization to support the conclusions?
Does the writer stay very close to the readings done as a background for the paper, or does the writer go beyond them to come up with some thoughts on his or her own? No one expects amazing predictions or wild speculation. You probably do not have experience in the industry you want to work in. You can, however, give some real thought to what might happen. This is NOT an essay summarizing the thoughts of others. While you can certainly introduce ideas from readings you have done, go beyond them and think for yourself.
