Prevention of Diabetic Complications in Primary Care.

Diabetes continues to be major health threat in the world. This disease as increased in the recent past becoming one of the major cause of and incapacitation across the globe resulting from non- communicable disease. In America alone, over 24 million people have diabetes and about 57 million are in a condition called pre-diabetes (Flegal, Carroll, Ogden & Curtin, 2010). Various measures have been established to manage diabetes, both curative and preventive. The following are some of the measures that can be taken to prevent complications from diabetes in primary care.

•   Prevention of cardiometabolic risk factors has been one of the most important step in the management of risk factors. This includes control of blood sugars within the recommended levels. Secondly, reduction in consumption of high fat diet and food with high glycemic index also help reduce complications resulting from diabetes (Buse, et al 2007; Renders, et al, 2001).

•   Control of blood pressures reduces the risks of developing stroke and heart disease associated with diabetes by between 33 – 50 %. It further reduces the risk of developing retinopathy, renal complication and other neurovascular complications of diabetes by about 25 % (Goldstein,et al 2006)..

•   Use of low dose aspirin in primary management of cardiovascular complication associated with diabetes (Pignone et al , 2010).

•   Another step that has been taken to prevent diabetic complication in primary care is the foot care programs. This program is geared towards reducing development of diabetic foot among diabetic patients (Singh, Armstrong & Lipsky, 2005).

•   Physical exercises and reduction in body weight is also an effective measure towards reduction in the complications of diabetes. These measures also help reduce the onset of diabetes among the pre-diabetic patients (Rydén, et al, 2007.

•   Another method that has been used to reduce complications of diabetes is the screening and early detection of ophthalmic problems using laser among diabetic patients. Early detection allows for early intervention to prevent severe eye complication (Zimmet, 2009).
