Power and Influence

Power and Influence
Journal Questions – After Class
Required: Pick one from the book section – otherwise, whatever is relevant or on your mind.

Power
• Personal power -which of the questions was most impactful for you?
• Interpersonal Power – peer card sort exercise about a situation where you want to take more powerful action – what ended up in your “short list” and why. What is your plan to take action? If you’ve already taken action, how did it go?
• Examples of when you have seen the blame game at work? Result?
• Do you tend to have a “common role” in the blame game? Reasoning? Reflect about a power quote – one of Stephanie’s or another one.
Book
• Types of Power p. 203-210 – Think if a specific situation – what types of power do you think you have? Why?
• Think of a leader that you know well – what types of power do you give them? Why?
• Power Strategies p 221-228 – Strategies that you want to try?
• Examples of people who used unethical tactics or strategies (p.228-230) – what happened? Did they recover?
• DOOP Scale (p. 231) – does your org or one you know well have dysfunctional office politics? Which of the strategies would work to address the issues?
• Something else from chap 7, 8 or 9 that you’ve been pondering.

Week 7:

Journal Questions
• There is an article called, Quality of Work Life and Manager: Muddle in the Middle by Schlesinger and Oshry. You should be able to find it on Business Source Premier. Might be an interesting read for those of you who are, or strive to be, in the middle management ranks. Read and reflect on the article.

Week 8: Strategic Leadership, Culture, Team Leadership

Journal Questions – After Class
Do one of the book questions and then any others that interest you.

Culture
If you could change something about your org culture what would you change, how would you go about doing that? What can you do in your current role to “live that change”
Do you think your org does: too much, the right amount, not enough, in the area of diversity and inclusiveness?

Strategic Leadership
Is the mission of your org lived? Why or why not?
If you were a senior leader of your org – what would you do?
How far out does your org plan? (what’s a strategic plan? 1 yr, 3 yr, 5 yr, 10 yr) Do the workerbees know the strategic plans?
What are ways that you can be a strategic leader in your current role?

*Book (chapters 12-14)
Take one of the surveys -reflect on your results
Something else from the chapters that has you thinking.
