1) Compare and contrast the assumption about Global Politics made by Marxism and Realism. What assumptions about the nature of Global Politics are advanced by each tradition? Why are Neo-Marxist theories currently predominant in the Periphery and reviled in the nations of the Core? 2) In attempting to explain chronic poverty in the Global South, some theorists direct attention primarily toward what happens within these countries while others focus on the position of developing countries in the Globalized Political Economy. How does Dependency Theory explain the causes of the economic gap between rich and poor countries ? What foreign policy options does it recommend as a solution to chronic poverty? Do you find it convincing? Why or why not?

Identify a specific public policy of the federal government that originated in the year you were born. This “specific public policy” can be in the form of either a piece of legislation passed by Congress or a regulation promulgated by a federal administrative agency. If you have trouble identifying a “specific public policy” from the year you were born, feel free to use a different year (such as the year of a parent’s birth or a sibling’s birth). Once you have identified a “specific public policy” passed/promulgated in the year you choose, do the following:

Describe the legislation/regulation you have identified (i.e., what was the purpose of the legislation/regulation, whom was the legislation/regulation designed to affect, what administrative agencies were tasked with implementing this particular policy)?
How did the political climate/atmosphere of the United States during the year you chose contribute to the creation of the legislation/regulation you identified?
Has the “specific public policy” you identified changed at all (or been amended) over time? What changes in the political climate or atmosphere of our country have contributed to the changes in this policy over time?
What interest groups supported this legislation/regulation? Why do they support it? What interest groups opposed this legislation/regulation? Why did they oppose it?
What aspects, specifically, from our course texts help you better understand the development of this piece of legislation (this section of your paper should include at least one citation to both of our course texts)?

Your essay should be between 8-10 pages in length and will be graded on a point scale of 0-100 and be worth 16.67% of your final grade. (You must use 12 point Times New Roman font for this essay, and you must use standard margins – in other words, do not create larger margins (or larger fonts) to artificially lengthen your paper).
