PHL 105 Paper 1Paper Instructions(about 4-5 pages, typed, double-spaced)You will write a four to five-page paper in the argumentative form. You will need to offer an argument in your paper that has a clearly defined thesis near the beginning of the paper and a strong logical structure. This means you will need to argue for a specific point by providing good reasons to accept that point as being true. The general topic for the paper is symbols. By “symbols,” I mean the way Clifford Geertz meant it in his famous definition of religion. So we are not just talking about the Star of David, or the Christian cross. Instead these symbols are ones that produce powerful and lasting moods and motivations that create and describe a general order of existence. You need to pick one of the symbols from the following list:Judaism:1) The Temple (both historically what it meant and what Jews look for in the future)2) The Talmud (its importance to Jewish life and various views of it from current sects) 3) The Messiah (a description of the variety of views found in Judaism)Christianity:4) Baptism (its importance and various views from the different sects)5) The Trinity (philosophical and theological importance and understanding)6) Doctrine of Original Sin and Grace (origin of concepts and importance to Christians)Islam:7) The Five Pillars (there importance to Islam and views from the different sects) 8) The Hadith (its importance and function in Islam)9) Sufism (historical development and views of this version of Islam)You need to use outside sources along with your textbook. Please be careful when using sources from the internet (there is a lot of really poor or even just plain wrong information floating around). Also, Wikipedia can be a good source of information, but it should only be a place for you to start. If you find the information there to be good, then look at the bottom for the references the article uses. Seek those references out, and if you find the information there important and useful, thenyou should use those as your citations in your paper (either as quotes or as paraphrases). You need to use footnotes or endnotes. Merely having a bibliography is not good enough! You can use any commonly recognized citation method, such APA, MLA, or Turabian. Just pick one of them and stick with that method throughout the paper. One example for a symbol (you cannot choose this one) is the Christian cross. Your thesis might be something like this: “Christians use the cross as both a reminder of the most important tenets of their faith and an actual physical symbol expressing their connection to God and humankind.” You would then go on to argue why this thesis is true by providing well-explained, specific examples to demonstrate your points. An example paper outline from the topic of the Christian Cross:Thesis: “Christians use the cross as both a reminder of the most important tenets of their faith and an actual physical symbol expressing their connection to God and humankind.”Explanation of Cross (what is it?/Maybe provide a picture)Premise 1: The cross reminds Christians of the most important tenets of their faith.A. The cross reminds Christians of the sacrifice of Jesus.1. Jesus’ death on the cross.2. Explanation of why Jesus’ death is crucial in Christianity.3. The cross symbolizes this event because it is a physical representation (in small scale)of the actual death instrument used to kill Jesus.B. The cross reminds Christians of the resurrection of Christ.1. Jesus’ resurrection on third day (by Jewish understanding) after death on cross.2. Explanation of why Jesus’ resurrection is important.3. The cross symbolizes this event because it is presented as empty.Premise 2: The cross symbolizes the connection between God and humans and humans to each other.A. B.The vertical direction of the cross symbolizes God’s connection to humans.1. God is up in heaven and humans are down on earth.2. God is above (superior to) humans in everywayThe horizontal direction of the cross symbolizes human’s connection to each other.1. Humans are responsible for each other.a. The Golden Rule (Jesus’ version)b. The parable of the Good Samaritan2. Humans are on the same level with each other.a. Original sinb. Free willConclusion: I have argued that the cross reminds Christians of some of the most important elements of their faith and that it physically symbolizes human’s connection to both God and other humans. Given the above, it seems clear that the cross is an important symbol to Christians.
