Sorry that the information is very disorganised, that’s why I need help in making the whole idea sensible, will top academic writing please!
The proposal needs to have these:
Aim and objectives of the study;
Significance and impact of the proposed study;
Brief theoretical, conceptual basis and background evidence of the study;
Research design and method.
Research Proposal (my idea, but disorganised, please rearrange in logical sense)
Background:
My teaching experience:
Teaching in the music department in Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) since 1995, undergraduate programme.
HKAPA comprises of 6 Schools: Music Film TV, Drama, Dance, Theatre and Entertainment Arts and Chinese Opera https://www.hkapa.edu/
In HKAPA music school undergraduate programme, the curriculum is quite similar to most of the music colleges around the world (practical subjects, major instrument, chamber, academic subjects including music theory, history, aural, etc). The pros of traditional curriculum are: more focus on each training, and outcome can be clearly stated. But the cons of traditional curriculum are: 21st century with internet, teaching and learning should reform (or keep revising) due to convenience of information, etc…… (please help to give reasons), also, nowadays pace is quick, arts activities became more cross-discipline involved. There are many new type of multi media arts concerts and activities even in elite orchestras around the world. (please give some examples here)
Also for local arts performance, more and more music concerts combine visual arts, acrobatic performance, drama, magicians (please refer to recent years of HK Arts Festival programme)
https://www.hk.artsfestival.org/en/. Are the students in the academy well trained in academy?
If we look back at “Music”, we realised that music itself is always closely related to other art form (please further explain/define) Years ago (please check the year) from Leonard Bernstein’s Six Lectures (The Unanswered Questions at Harvard), he already pointed out how music is related to poems, words, etc…… . (please use Bernstein’s philosophy as back support of interdisciplinary curriculum, in fact that is my original inspiration of this study, so please apply his philosophy in the proposal) (Also, I attached a few documents that I read, please add on more proper readings.)
Interdisciplinary curriculum has been practised in many institutes for more than a decade, since when people found it important? What are the difficulties and challenges of these interdisciplinary courses? How is the current practice of interdisciplinary subject in tertiary music institutes in other countries?
It seems to be a trend of some interdisciplinary courses in the academy (HKAPA) (but not music school), I noticed some in other departments in the academy, some courses are taught by several lecturers from various department.(I will check out those courses detail) What is the benefit of doing this interdisciplinary courses? What are the possibilities in launching interdisciplinary courses in Music School?
HKAPA has its unique setting of having different schools combine in one academy, and did we make the best use of all possibilities? And how do we prepare our students better in 21st century highly competitive world? From the past, graduates did get a good career starts, but now, more and more professional in the market, how can the newly grad stand out from the experienced one? They need the flexibilities and broaden knowledge on top of their own skills.
The HKAPA has the advantages of comprising of various schools of different arts form, we should make use of this advantages to provide more opportunities for our students, music students can learn more about dance, Film TV, drama…….. (in current curriculum, they can select a few courses from various schools). For examples: How about a course that combine music and dance practice? E.g. Students actually try out minuet, pavane in baroque period; bolero as a dance (not just playing Ravel’s bolero without even knowing the background of the dance rhythm; how about the rhythmic and jazz dance when they study Duke’s Ellington?)
How do we use visual arts for music? How about doing a video clip for music excerpts? Music students will benefit and broaden their knowledge when they get some hands on practice on combining different arts form together. In future when they work in organization, e.g. HK Arts Festival, Premier Performance HK, HK Phil, HK Sinfonietta, or even perform as a gig in some events, all these interdisciplinary knowledge will come to be useful.
Research Questions: (please check the order, logic and feel free to amend )
1. Why interdisciplinary music in teaching and learning is important in HK context?
2. What are some examples of interdisciplinary music curriculum models? (What are the current practice of interdisciplinary music curriculum in other countries)
3. What are interdisciplinary music teaching strategies?
4. What are the difficulties and challenges in promoting interdisciplinary music teaching in HKAPA? (teaching staffs collaboration? Curriculum planning?, etc)
5. What are the goals for interdisciplinary music curriculum in the future?
6. How does new technology enhance interdisciplinary music teaching?
7. The effectiveness of interdisciplinary music teaching in undergraduate music programme in HKAPA
8. The design of outcome based and flexible curriculum of interdisciplinary academic course in HKAPA
Methodology (I am very puzzled in here):
1. Research on current interdisciplinary curriculum, their background, rationale, and results.
2. Design interdisciplinary course in academy for HKAPA to see the results and feedback. (what do you think? please suggest other methodology or approach)
The impact of the study:
Design and propose multidisciplinary music curriculum that will fit in HK context (?) (please suggest other impact or significance of this study
