Topic: Pick a crime type, burglary, bank robbery, arson
Order Description
RESEARCH TWO
1) Pick a crime type, burglary, bank robbery, arson, for example, and find three or four examples from the annals of United States crime that fit this type of criminal activity. This will be your data. Stick to the crime typologies that we have already read in class so far.
Stay away from serial homicides, mass killings and contemporary terror attacks. The first two, in spite of all the press coverage, are a small fraction of all homicides that occur every year, and are not appropriate for our work here. Contemporary terrorism is beyond the scope of what we can cover in our course.
2) Once you have your data, pick a theory that will be used to analyze the type of crime, and the specific cases of that crime, with which you have chosen to work. Use a specific theory. For instance, if you like a Marxist perspective, use a specific conflict theory, like William Bonger or William Chamblis.
3) Writing your paper:
A) In the introduction, identify and explain the crime typology and the specific crimes you have chosen. Why are they important in the overall picture of the criminological enterprise in the United States? Share any other information about why you chose these scenarios that might be important to your analysis.
B) In the body of the paper, analyze the criminal activity involved with your choice of crime.
Analyzing means taking a topic apart into smaller pieces, and using a theoretical viewp01oint to understand and explain what all the individual pieces mean and how
they fit together. The goal is to see if the analysis provides you with a greater under-
standing of the overall topic.
C) Still in the body of your work, discuss where your analysis using this particular theory aids in understanding the overall picture of this type of crime, and where it does not.
Where and what are the weaknesses of this particular theory in lending understanding to the crimes?
D) Use as many reference sources as needed to produce a scholarly analytical work.
E) The conclusion can be a brief review of the main findings of your analysis.
4) 4) Submittals, postings and critiques, rewrites:
A) Submit your work as a file upload to the Canvas module site, “Research Two.”
B) At the same time, post your work (a file upload works best) to your group’s discussion site for Research Two.
C) By the due date, reply to each member of your group by critiquing their work as posted to your group’s discussion page.
D) By the due date, submit your rewrite, incorporating both my comments on your original work and any relevant comments from your colleagues.
5) Requirements for formatting, citations, bibliographies:
A) This work should be double spaced, 4 – 5 pages long, using the DAAC style formatting guide. The link is included right under the “Research One” Canvas module.
B) A bibliography of at least five different sources, not including Wiki sites.
