From the earliest years of Western philosophy there has been a tension between relativism and objectivism. In its formative years, this debate culminates in the confrontation of Socrates with his contemporaries as presented by Plato in his dialogues. While this debate may not be an explicit theme in Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, Kant’s Grounding for the Metaphysics of Morals, or Mill’s Utilitarianism, it is nonetheless implicit in each of these three philosophers’ moral theories. Indeed, each of these theories recognizes some objective ground, or universal standard of moral judgment, which secures it against relativism. Discuss this in some detail.
