In the PHAEDO, Socrates attempts to show that the soul survives the death of the body. First, carefully and in intricate and specific detail explain how Socrates tries to establish this claim. Lay out his reasoning as clearly and as exhaustively as possible. Then, assess the strength of Socrates’ case. Does Socrates succeed in establishing that the soul survives the death of the body?if not, why not? where EXACTLY does his argument falter. In your essay, make sure you cleanly separate the exegetical (or explaining) component from the critical component. Begin by stating the author’s views as clearly and as charitably as you can. In other words, begin by explaining to your reader how the argument you are writing about is SUPPOSED to work. Then, in the last part of your essay, offer a critical assessment of the argument. If you think that the argument is flawed, explain why. If you approve of the argument, tell the reader why the argument works. Consider a possible objection to the argument and explain why it doesn’t stick. PLEASE DO NOT USE ANY QUOTATIONS FROM THE TEXT, unless you are citing a specific a specific term used by an author. On the other hand, PLEASE REFER TO SPECIFIC PASSAGES IN THE TEXT, and provide a footnote indicating the the page number and section (i.e.: 37a) on which the passage appears. What you are being evaluated on is your ATTENTION TO TEXTUAL DETAIL. The way to demonstrate such attention is to speak in SPECIFIC terms about PARTICULAR claims made by the author in PHAEDO.
