Personal Reflection on Pomfret’s Chinese Lessons and on Mann’s The China Fantasy

This assignment asks you to write a short (2.5-3 page) essay about two of the monographs assigned for this class. Both do in their own way offer a challenge to generally held assumptions about China here in the United States and elsewhere. This is a fairly informal writing assignment, but please reference any specific parts of either text (or possibly outside sources) you are using. What do you personally take away from each text? How did it impact your image of China?
