For this three-page paper, I’d like you to reflect on your relationship with technology (your smartphone, computer, OR any other electronic devices, applications, communication, etc.). You should make this a personal narrative.
Your paper should NOT take a side about the benefits of technology; also, your paper should NOT be a pro’s/con’s about technology. We are all well-aware of the negative and positive aspects of technology.
What would be interesting here is your personal story and the role of technology in your own life. Make it about you and the people that matter, perhaps the way your relationship with technology has determined, altered, or transformed the way you interact with your loved ones.
Explore any or several of the concepts discussed by Sherry Turkle and Nicholas Carr in their essays and videos, such as the value of solitude, the concept of loneliness, the idea of being online constantly, the complex world of social media, the culture of distraction, how our brains process information, our critical thinking skills in relation to Internet usage, and the experience of binging shows, movies, information, etc. Quote minimally from Turkles and/or Carrs work.
Here is a tip to succeed: Pick just one type of technology to focus on; tell a personal story about/recount an event about technology in order to illustrate an important point from one of the reading assignments (yes, you should quote/discuss a few key lines from one of the assignments). You can then analyze and reflect on your personal story to demonstrate your feelings about the role that this type of technology plays in your life.
