Personal Identity – Fission Case
Consider the following fission case:
X?s brain is removed from X?s body and X?s body is destroyed. X?s brain?s corpus callosum, the bundle of fibres responsible for retaining the capacity of information-transfer between the two brain hemispheres, is severed, leaving two (potentially) equipollent brain hemispheres. The single lower brain is divided and each hemisphere is transplanted into one of two qualitatively identical bodies of the fission outcomes Y1 and Y2. Our alleged intuition: since both Y1 and Y2 share with X all psychological characteristics, both are candidates for being identical with X: either, in the absence of the other, would have been identical with X.
You can choose one of the following four views to discuss in the paper:
1)Asymmetry view: X will be identical to either Y1 or Y2, but not both
2)Cohabitation view: Y1 and Y2 are co-located as X before the fission, and they split up after it
3)Double Identity view: X is identical to both Y1 and Y2
4)Double Identity view: X is identical to both Y1 and Y2
Follow the following instructions to write the paper, no introduction is needed, just go ahead and:
(i) offer the strongest support in favor of the position and explain why and analyze your supports critically, (ii) offer the strongest case to be made against the position and explain why and analyze your supports critically, and (iii) say whether the position is, on balance, more plausible than its denial by providing farther analysis and evidence
The paper should reveal independent analysis and reflection that go beyond the supports or the objections being discussed in the uploaded reading.(You can use their main ideas but show independent analysis of their ideas by providing evidences or examples)
The uploaded reading is about the Fission Case, please include 3 references to support you ideas in the paper.
I would like to request an outline by Friday and a rough draft by Sunday.
