When creating a personal cultural criticism, you approach an issue from two different discourse communities.
In order to understand this writing type, you need a clear definition of a discourse community. According to the National Council of Teachers of English, a discourse community identifies a grouping of people who share common language norms, characteristics, patterns, or practices as a consequence of their ongoing communications and identification with each other.
We are all members of various discourse communities. For example, I am a member of my immediate and extended families, the EOU faculty, a local church, and two local volunteer organizations. Each of these six communities have very distinct communication patterns, unique activities, common goals and values as well as varied practices of expression.
For the personal cultural criticism, you need to anchor your essay with two different discourse communities (culturals) for which you are a member of at least one community. Look at the variety of activities, communication styles, values/goals, or other patterns that are unique to each group, then compare these differences. You do not need to resolve these differences, but rather,demonstrate these variances through a connected theme that inspires the reader to contemplate the topic you are emphasizing
