As indicated in the Gallup report (2010), clinical leaders make a significant contribution to the quality of patient care. This is confirmed by Stanton, Lemer and Mountford (2010), who add that the clinical leader’s time has come. This is driven by a need to engage clinicians in policy developments, as the emphasis on quality increases, as the need for frontline clinical staff to engage in change and innovation grows and, finally, because clinicians are recognising themselves as stakeholders in the health industry. However, clinical leaders can do so much more if they are recognised (by themselves and others) as leaders and encouraged to see that leadership does indeed exist at many levels.
