For many years operations management was guided by the belief (Skinner) that it is difficult and ill-advised to compete by offering simultaneous superior performance along three, or more, performance dimensions. Examples of such dimensions are quality, product range
and price. However, these need not necessarily be the only, or relevant, competitive dimensions: many other possible variables exist.
Evaluate the merits of this belief. Give examples to support arguments for limiting the number of dimensions in an operations context, and provide instances where the view expressed by Skinner is no longer tenable for operations strategy. Your answer should broaden the debate from quality, product range and price to include other appropriate dimensions in the field of operations management. It is important that your arguments are supported by reference to relevant literature.
