DIRECTIONS FOR NERUDA POEM ANALYSIS

Content: 

Option 1:  Explicate ONE of the following Neruda poems:   “I Like for You to Be Still,” “Tonight I Can Write the Saddest Verses,” “I Don’t Love You As If You Were A Rose,” “Leaning Into the Evenings,” “I’m Explaining a Few Things,” or “The United Fruit Company.”   Discuss at least FOUR of the following elements of poetry in your explication:  metaphor, simile, tone, diction, stanza, line breaks, assonance, alliteration, sensory detail, anaphora, rhyme, personification, onomatopoeia, syntax, theme, the speaker, denotation, connotation, rhythm, synesthesia, end-stopped line, paradox.  Explain how these elements work to support the content of the poem.

Notes:  

  • Be sure that your conclusion ultimately answers the question of how these poems are relevant to people in society today.  Dig deep here.
