Week 5: Discussion 5
After reading this week’s chapter and reviewing the class materials, please research Islam in the news. For this discussion, you can see the other threads (if any) before you post.
For your first post, find a news article or short video clip (less than 5 minutes) about Muslim faith, practice or conversion. (Please, do NOT use a news article on Islam and violence, ISIS, or 9/11.) Provide a link and tell us what is interesting to you about this article or video. What did you learn from it? Your first post is due July 30.
Then, respond to two other students. What is interesting, informative or surprising about their choice? Contribute to their thread by adding another article or video with a short explanation about how your source adds to or refutes the information in their source. Your response posts are due July 31.
To locate a good source, try combining key terms in your search (don’t use the quotation marks):
“Islam practice women” or “Islam practice children” or “Islam practice elderly” or “Islam practice disabled”
“Islam conversion Africa” or “Islam conversion United Kingdom” or “Islam conversion Russia”
“Islam prayer work” or “Islam halal work” or “Islam hijab work”
“Islam religion health” or “Islam religion medicine”
Or a topic that interests you
Be careful with your sources. Make sure they are trustworthy and fair. If in doubt, use BBC or Al Jazeera America.
Try to focus on Islam and Muslim religious practice, rather than Islamic culture or Arab peoples. This can be difficult to discern; do the best you can.
