Multilingualism

You are expected to submit reaction papers (responses to questions posted in the Assignment/Homework section on BB) to the assigned reading by the due date. HW assignments submitted after the due date will be subjected to the deduction on a score point. For each chapter, there is one question posted. This one question may include mini-questions. However, it is still considered to be one question. Your reaction should include a summary paragraph, your response/reflection and implications. It can include what you found most interesting about the reading, what you agreed or disagreed with and why, how it relates to your own experiences, how it relates to other readings you’ve done for the is class or other classes, whether it prompted you to wonder about something, etc. Each response/reaction to a question should be at minimum two pages long or at maximum four-page long, double-spaced in Times New Roman of 12 font size (including all mini-questions).

Please read the textbook Foundations for Multilingualism in Education: From Principles to Practice – Chapter 5. The length of your response including all the sub-questions should be at minimum a page- and – a half, double-spaced, in 12 font, Times New Roman. In your response, please indicate the question number. Remember to submit your homework in an attached MS word file. If there is more than one chapter assigned, the same requirements apply to the second response/question.

Reflection Question/Statement:

Question 1:

Analyze the additive and subtractive program models through the language orientation lens offered by Richard Ruiz. Which models would you categorize under the language-as-problem, the language-as-right, and the language-as-resource orientation? Could some models warrant a dual classification, i.e., reflect two orientations? Can you think of examples where all three orientations may co-exist but be applied to different languages (e.g., at the district level, at the state level, or national level)?
