As you respond to DQs, you typically share information you have learned from a source. You should always include the in-text citation and Reference in your response when you are defining a new term. Let’s look at an example:

If the DQ asks you to apply the concept of Tuckman’s five stages of group formation to a workplace situation, you would learn what this term means by reading the course material first. When you do this, you must use an in-text citation in your post because you got the information from somewhere else. Even if you are paraphrasing this is necessary to prevent plagiarism, as well as lend validity to your assertions. And of course, when you use an in-text citation, you must also provide a proper reference as well. Others should be able to see where you retrieved this information. Not using scholarly sources is merely offering your opinion, which is not an academic discussion.

This might look like:

Tuckman’s five stages of group formation include forming, storming, norming performing and adjourning (Oke, 2011). These five stages….

Please note… this IS NOT optional if you are using information from a source. If you are discussing something you have learned from your reading, you should always cite it.

Here is a good way to approach your posts:

When introducing a concept, you must:

1. Define/explain what the concept means using a scholarly source

2. Cite it properly

3. Then apply the concept to the topic of the DQ

Think of it as validating your statements. Using scholarly sources reinforces your ideas and ensures that we stay on topic in class. Also, remember that grammar and writing style do play into your grade, so be sure to proofread.

7.1 Review the five functional areas within the HR department, and explain which one you think is most important and why. Which of these five functional areas works most closely with the rest of the business as a strategic partner, and how might this change depending on the type of company? How do the needs of an organization decide what human and capital resources are required to be successful?

7.2 In what way is the HR function important to the success of the everyday tasks in an organization? Discuss the competitive advantages that can accrue to an organization that genuinely is committed to workplace diversity? Please make certain that you indicate strategies for overcoming resistance to diversity programs.

7.3 How does an individual’s faith or worldview inform their personal management practices?

8.1 Identify the main types of traditional and horizontal organization structure. Using an organization of your choice as an example how is the structure of the organization a reflection of its environment (including national culture), its goals, and competences?

8.2 Using an organization with which you are familiar, identify its core culture and the elements of its observable culture as defined by Senge. What do you think would need to be changed in order to facilitate learning? What role would organizational development play in overcoming resistance to change?

8.3 Using an organization with which you are familiar, identify ways through which feed-forward and feedback controls can be used to assure the high quality of its final outcome. How do these controls lead to effective management?
