1. Argument essay in response to Daniel Akst’s “America: Land of Loners” (pgs 84-90 is the text; prompt is on pg 91 under “Responding to the Topic”).
2. Argument essay in response to Leonard Pitts Jr.’s essay “History Tells Hard Stories of Ethnic Clashes” (pgs. 81-82 is the text; prompt is on pg. 83 under the “Responding to the Topic” prompt.
3. Argument essay in response to Andrew Lam’s “Globalization vs. Americanization” (pgs. 70-72 is the text; prompt is on pg. 73 under “Responding to the Writer”).
4. Argument essay in response to “Swoosh!” by Read Mercer Schuchardt (pgs. 225-228 is the text; prompt is on pg. 229 under “Responding to the Writer”).

For each argument essay in response to an essay in the book, you will need to follow the outline below.
I. Introduction
a. Hook to entice your audience to consider the topic you are arguing
b. Background information: basic information about the issue and the position being argument.
c. Thesis statement: states the position to be argued in the essay.
II. Reasons that support the thesis statement (each letter is a paragraph)
a. Reason/argument 1 (main point #1)
i. Supporting evidence
ii. Supporting evidence
iii. Comment on evidence on why it’s relevant in supporting your thesis
b. Reason/argument 2 (main point #2)
i. Supporting evidence
ii. Supporting evidence
iii. Comment on evidence on why it’s relevant in supporting your thesis
c. Reason/argument 3 (main point #3)
i. Supporting evidence
ii. Supporting evidence
iii. Comment on evidence on why it’s relevant in supporting your thesis
III. Counter arguments and responses to them
a. Mention the arguments from the other side of the issue
b. Briefly refute (prove they are wrong with reasons and evidence) the other side’s arguments
IV. Conclusions
a. Restate thesis
b. Review main points
c. Connect back to your hook
