Paper details:Analyzing Art EC
This assignment asks you to analyze a work of art, examining how it reflects its time period and explaining its value as a good work of art. It’s either a fun assignment or a really hard one, depending on your point of view. I’ll be grading it on the basis of critical thinking, clarity of explanation, and the amount of thought and value you put into your answers. In other words, if you do a half-baked job on it or you just can’t explain it well, you’re not going to get a great grade. This is extra credit, so I will grade it honestly with no curve, no mercy, and no sympathy. It’s not required to get through this class, so do it like an exemplary student, or don’t do it.
Your answers to the assignment must be presented in a college-friendly manner. That means if you present them in written format, they must be double spaced, typed, with in-text citations and a works cited page.
Choose your favorite art work from the course, or an art work from one of the time periods we’ve covered in the course. Remember, that can include painting, sculpture, visual arts/performance art, literature, music, film, dance, and theater. Once you’ve selected the work, answer the following questions.
You should include a citation page in MLA format showing where you found images and information. Please also include in-text citations.
THIS ARE THE QUESTIONS:
1. What is the title of your art work
The Sistine Chapel
2. Who created the art work? (if known)
Michelangelo
3. What medium is used?
Frescoes
4. When was it created? (year, if known)
It took him from 1508 to 1512 to finished
5. What artistic period or style is it a part of?
High Renaissance Art (1490-1530)
6. How does it reflect the values and ideas of that artistic period or style? (Be specific. This answer should be several paragraphs long. It should explain the important values of the art time period and connect the work of art to those values & styles).
7. If I encountered this art work after taking in Introduction to Humanities class, how would I know what artistic period it was from? (This answer may repeat some of the material from answer #6).
8. Why do you think this art work continues to be important and recognized? Thousands of other art works from the same time were forgotten. What makes this one so special?
9. Why did you pick this art work? What about it appealed to you in particular?
10. How does this art work reflect your personal definition of good or worthwhile art? (This is your second really big, important answer. You’re going to need to figure out what makes something ‘art’ to you, and why this work of art fits in with that definition.).
Okay, that’s it…but in all honesty, this assignment is really tough. I want you to really think about how history affects the art created in a time – how the two are connected – and about what you think of or value as art. I’m not just looking for information here. I’m looking for the integration of information with your ideas and understanding.
