REFLECTION PAPER

Everyone has a set of values by which they live and it is easy to impose the values that we believe in strongly onto other people. When working with clients, it is crucial to know the values that we strongly believe in so that we don’t intentionally or unintentionally impose our values onto our clients. When that happens, a social worker ends up violating at least one SW value or ethical standard, sometimes more.

This assignment has four parts, and each part should be numbered. It requires you to 1) Identify and discussin detailoneof your personal values or beliefs that could be in conflict with a SW value or ethical standard (e.g. what is the value; how and why did it develop; why is it important/meaningful to you);2) Imagine that you are now working as a social worker and describe arealistic challenging client situation that might trigger your personal value or belief from #1. Include your reactions to &interactions with or on behalf of the client (verbal &/or non-verbal)and name one value or ethical standard that your words and/or behavior toward the client would violate if this really happened; 3) Define and discussthesocial work value or ethical standardnamed in #2 that your behavior would violate if this really happened with a client. Be sure to define and discuss the social work value or ethical standard in your own words. What is its meaning and importance?

Conclude your essay by 4) identifying and discussing with some detail one realistic strategy that could help you address or avoid this conflict as a professional social worker, and help you put aside the personal value that you discussed when working with clients in the future. (Please note that transferring a client is often not feasible, and therefore, is not an acceptable strategy to discuss for this assignment).
