Assignment Sheet for Lensing Essay
The assignment for this unit is to write an essay through the lens of Sianne Ngai’s Ugly
Feelings. To complete this assignment you:
-must use Sianne Ngai* as Lens A and apply her theory to Lens B. Your paper may focus
on her theories of ugly feelings found in the introduction, or her theories based on
irritation or anxiety. You may also choose to combine her theories and examine Lens B
through both irritation and anxiety.
must have a clear and focused Lens B. For Lens B you are free to use any of the
readings (required or suggested) up until Week Eight. You may also choose to do your
lensing essay using the film, television show or music video you wrote about for your
Week 7 writing assignment.
must use direction citations, paraphrase and summary for both Lens A and Lens B. You
will not pass this assignment if you do not use direct citation for both Lens A and Lens B.
in addition you may find it helpful to use criticism obtained from the library’s electronic
database for your paper.
-remember reading as a lens means literally looking at things as the reading does, trying
to think in its terms (page 118).
-keep in mind you are not looking for a perfect match, thus you need to remember that
whenever you apply Lens A to Lens B you are taking Lens A from its original context
and using its ideas in a somewhat different context which will require you to adjust and
refocus to bring this new content into clear focus. (Hint: this is where your brilliant brains
and critical thinking enter the equation). (page 119).
-your paper will focus on the yes pattern (page119) AND the but (where the
reading/film does not seem to fit). (page 119).
your analysis should also take into consideration anomalies and binaries (page 94). You
should think of this as a continuation of Moves 2 and 3 from Essay #1.
your paper should move from implications to conclusions (responding to the so what?-
page 33).
-write a minimum of four full pages, not including your Works Cited page. Your essay
should not exceed 8 pages.
you will avoid using the personal pronoun I in this paper.
-your essay should be double-spaced, titled, and typed in Times or Times New Roman.
