The range of materials used in the marine engineering environment is wide but it is often advantageous to modify their properties with specialist treatments i the manufacturing process.

These treatments may include coating and additives amongst others giving an approved performance.

Alternatively, materials may, over time, have their characteristics modified as a result of being used. in general these effects have a negative impact and may result in failure.

Research and write up 5 different treatments giving consideration to, but not limited to the following;

1. What material characteristics are required and what materials are used
2. How the treatment is applied
3. How does the treatment modify the materials characteristics
4. Are there any limitations or disadvantages to the treatment
5. You should reference applications in the marine sector
