For this paper, you need to choose one type of product and analyze the marketing language surrounding it. This includes the name of the products, euphemisms used to market it, and other descriptions on the product’s label. You may, for example, choose to analyze brands of breakfast cereal, candy bars, energy drinks, pharmaceutical drugs, perfume brands, deodorants, condom brands, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, or some other product type. The product type itself is up to you to determine.

After you determine your product type, you will need to go shopping and take some notes at the store(s) or online. You will need to write down the name of each brand and make notes on the types of language used on the product labeling used to market it to customers. The exact number of products you decide to analyze is up to you but it should be somewhere between 3-8 product brands.

In your paper, you will need to analyze the way these markets try to appeal to audience. You should have a standard introduction with an attention grabber, an introduction to your topic, and clear thesis that explains the overall commonalities in this product’s marketing. Your essay should answer the following types of questions: What do the product names have in common? How do they differ in their attempts to market to customers? How are they similar? In what way does the language used on the product labels exaggerate or attempt to paint the product in the most positive light possible? What euphemisms do these products use in their branding and marketing? What are the specific connotations of the marketing language used to market these products? What might a more “truthful” or “plain” type of marketing say instead? What does the way these particular products say about what the companies think will appeal to customers?

-Have a clear introduction, body and conclusion

-Have an MLA style header and 1″ margins on all sides

-be between 2 to 3 pages (750-1250 words)
