Part I
1. Choose one contemporary manifesto (1968-present). **I picked Delirious New York: A Retroactive Manifesto for Manhattan – Summary can be used instead of the whole book**
2. Analyze the manifesto for the structure and form of the language, ie. Does it use images? How are the sentences constructed? Are there other language ‘games’ set out in this document. What is the ‘mechanics’ of the text. How does this text form shape the message and content of the manifesto? What is the context of the manifesto- for who? Against what?
3. The analysis should take the form of visual ‘mark ups’ on the original manifesto document. Exercise should consider the implications and effects of various conventions of notation and annotation.
4. Please note that this is also a design exercise, so it must be done in illustrator/indesign or appropriate design software and considered as a visual as well as textual form of analysis.
Part II
Using the analysis above as a model or template you should re-write the manifesto for the contemporary moment. Students should make a decision about the format/media and layout of this replicated manifesto.
