LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students who successfully complete this module will be able to:

• explain and evaluate the relationship between management theory and practice;
• understand the role of managers in organisations as well as differences in management styles;
• demonstrate research skills by secondary research;
• understand and apply different tools for business and management analysis;
• demonstrate written communication skills;

Individual Essay: 2,000 words (80% weighting)

Answer ONE from the following option of three assessment topics:

1. Choose an organisation with which you are familiar. Analyse the culture of the organisation with reference to two different theories of culture.
2. Discuss, giving specific examples from industry, how managers modify the receptiveness of an organisation to change the way it operates. Consider the key challenges that managers face when implementing that change.
3. Identify a recent example of dubious corporate behaviour in a business in the UK. Compare and contrast the ethical issues raised by the behaviour from three key stakeholders’ perspectives.

Marks will be allocated as follows:
Introduction 10%
Critical review of relevant management theories 35%
Analytic discussion of topic with relevant example(s) 35%
Conclusion 10%
Clarity of writing, essay structure, correct referencing etc. 10%
