In spite of their differing connotations, managing and leading represent complementary functions. A manager is someone who oversees and administers, ensuring that day-to-day tasks and activities occur without significant disruption. A leader is someone who innovates, inspires and develops new ideas. All of these different qualities must be present in a strong leader.
