The recent scandal with Horsemeat being found in process meat pies
has highlighted a problem for all process foods that are available in
the UK high street shops.
Your task is to select a processed product* and study the supply
chain for all the ingredients found on the list** Then submit a report
that details your findings for the distribution and supply chain for
each of the components list
* A Processed product is one that has multiple ingredients brought together by a
food processing company. The majority of ready meals and other packaged meal
products would be suitable. If in doubt check with the seminar tutor.
** The report should include a good quality copy of the ingredients list printed on
the product packaging.Demonstrate a well-grounded knowledge in both the theory and
practical application of all aspects of operations management

Students should conform to the conventions of the above assessment format in the
preparation of their assignments. The relevant assessment criteria have been stated to
enable and guide students in the preparation of their work. Achievement of the learning
outcomes and the application of relevant theories to the assessment task should be

assignment task shown on the previous sheet. An executive/management summary is
unnecessary in a report of this size.
Your report should include references to the appropriate operations management literature
(textbooks, journals and websites). Care should be taken when consulting websites, they are
not all equally authoritative (for example Wikipedia is not peer-reviewed; therefore is not
considered an academic reference website). A minimum of 3 different academic references
must be cited, but a good report is likely to cite many more.
You are advised to keep a backup copy of the report until they receive their grade and
regularly back-up all computer work onto a CD or other storage method. A disk crash is not an
acceptable reason for handing in work late.
