Literary analysis of the “Ladies paradise” by Zola.

Topic: Select a passage (one to several pages in length) from Emile Zola’s The Ladies Paradise. How is this passage representative of Zola’s narrative style? What speci?c literary devices does he use? How are these important to the construction of the narrative as a whole? Explain in one succinct introductory paragraph, one or two key stylistic differences that distinguish Balzac and Flaubert from Zola (only as they pertain to your selected passage).

The introductory paragraph on Balzac and Flaubert will help de?ne and bring clarity to your analysis of Zola’s novel. What to look for: metaphors, similes, prolepses (anticipation, foreshadowing); symmetries and contrasts (characters, images, in the plot and subplots); the use of dialogue (development of a character through voicing; how dialogue works as a feature of the plot); vividness of descriptions (use of rhetorical ?gures, types of adjectives and adverbs; and sentence structures (the varying rhythms of long and short phrases and their effectiveness); the role of the narrator. Please refrain from consulting secondary sources.
