Linguistics

1) Do linguists think that all of one’s language is nature (innate, built in, part of the genetic code), or
all nurture (learned from the input), or some combination of these? What is the role of the input
language in language learning?
2) The speech of young children leads linguists to conclude that children do not leam language purely
by imitation of their parents or caregivers. Why do they think that? (Don’t just repeat what
Chomsky believes. Genetic research has not yet supported his claim that language is encoded in our
DNA). What is the reasoning behind this position. based on the actual speech of children? Give
evidence for this position by giving an example from the actual speech of children that is clearly
not imitation.
3) Methodology: describe one of the experimental methods illustrated in the video and say what they
showed about children’s language acquisition (i.e., what were the results?) (The ones I have in
mind show something about children‘s syntax.) If you wish. you can use one of the following
sentences as a hint.
Examples:
When did the boy say he hurt himself? vs. When did he
Big Bird is feeding Cookie Monster
4) The ‘gavagai” example is a metaphor for how children might learn new words. What problem does
it illustrate? What assumption do all children seem to bring to the task that helps eliminate the
problem?

Read the book: Hulit, L. & Howard, M. Born to Talk, An Introduction to Speech and Language Development (6th Edition). Allyn and Bacon: Needham Heights, MA. (2006) Use only sources from this book.

Please write (make-up) 30 Multiple Choice Questions/Answers from the Textbook Reading: Three will come from each of the Ten Chapters (or the Appendix if there is no Chapter 10 in your edition). For each question, please indicate the answer, AND the page number used to make up the question. Each question should have a complete statement followed by five choices for an answer (A through E). The answers to each question are to be indicated in some manner, like an asterisk or in capitol letters. For example:

· 8. The focus of this lecture was…

A. Tropical Agriculture

B. Family Planning

C. Frustration

D. LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT* (Page 231)

E. All of the above

The indicated answer is D, but you do not have to use both the “*” sign and the capitalized letters as shown in “D.” Any one method will do, except please don’t use bold letters because they are often un-bolded in the email transmission.

An annotated citation of the Class Textbook should be included at the end of the paper. The comment part of the annotated bibliography should focus on the most important concept you learned from the Text. Make it in an of in APA format. If you need example let me know. I have a picture.
