Order Description
Respond to the questions concerning preparation of a court report:

You work for the Dept of Family and Community Services, NSW and you have been asked to prepare a report as a departmental officer to help the court determine if there are grounds for a care order and what is in the child’s best interests in the following case;
Police raid finds boy kept in a locked shed and an elaborate underground hydroponic setup.

The content of the report – the information that is required within the report. Such requirements are usually spelled out and this is exemplified in the Children (Criminal Proceedings) Regulation 2011 s. 34.

Also important is the way this information is put together and how it is framed. In writing a background report, for example, you need to ask yourself ‘what is the purpose of this information’ and what is relevant to this specific case and why? For a further discussion on this see Swain (2005).

Another point that was made was that, in this assignment, you are not required to actually write a report, but rather write about the process of gathering information (and the issues that may arise from this) and putting that information together in a coherent way so that clear, factual informative and does not contain bias.
