ENG 222 Assignment #2: Writing a Report
Assignment: Write a recommendation report for a research project. This will constitute a major assignment in this course. A recommendation report presents information on a project or problem, but it goes one step further by o?ering suggestions about what the readers ought to do next.
For this assignment, you must write a report in which you offer a recommendation to improve one aspect of life in Riyadh. Your starting point should be the comprehensive survey published by Bayt.com and YouGov, “The Bayt.com Top Cities in the Middle East and North Africa Survey 2015.” Review the document carefully, and select one point from the survey in which the city of Riyadh does not rate highly. Your report will address how to fix this shortcoming.
For more specific guidelines on writing a report, refer to Chapter 17 – Writing Informational Reports, and Chapter 18 – Writing Recommendation Reports, in Technical Communication, as well as the online links on the Moodle course page.
Purpose: Writing reports is an essential skills for business people, engineers, scientists, and many others. For this assignment you will learn the basic outline of a report and how to write persuasively to ensure the maximum possibility that your report will be read and acted upon. Your audience will be city official in Riyadh: whoever could take action to make your proposal a reality.
Requirements:
• Your report should be around 3-4 pages long. Thus, you need to be efficient with your communication: include specific information, but still be concise.
• Your topic should be a real-life problem that you see in Riyadh—especially one of the areas in which Riyadh does not rate highly in the Bayt.com survey.
• The report must include the following sections:
o Cover Page o Results
o Abstract o Conclusions
o Introduction o Recommendation
o Methods o References
o Appendix (Questionnaire)
• Your report should include enough relevant and specific information to be convincing. It should be well ordered and organized. Refer to Chapters 17 and 18 in Technical Communication for other guidelines for writing effective reports. Analyze the model of an excellent report shown on pages 488-511 in Technical Communication. (Note: Your report will be much shorter.)
• You must do guided, independent research as part of this report.
o You must find at least three valid, relevant sources relating to your topic. At least one of them should be a peer-reviewed scholarly research article.
o You must create and conduct a questionnaire or survey on your topic. You may choose any audience or population to administer the survey to. Your survey must be at least 5 questions long; you must survey at least 20 people. Refer to Chapter 6 in Technical Communication on how to write a questionnaire or survey.
• You may use a downloaded template for the format of your report, or you may create your own style. Regardless, your report should look professional and attractive.
Grading: You will be graded on your ability to focus a topic, find an utilize outside sources using research, develop your ideas with effective support, organize your points into a coherent order, and argue persuasively for your report to be read and acted upon. You will also be expected to use appropriate vocabulary and diction, as well as demonstrate control over English grammar, punctuation, and mechanics. The format must be professional and include all the necessary elements.
You will be graded according to a rubric, which will be provided before the essay is due. This assignment is worth 15% of your final course grade in ENG 222.
