Kindred 2

novel, Kindred.

A close analysis of Butler’s expressions in the novel, Kindred shows an emphasis of the impact of slavery to the slaves. When one is enslaved, he or she is not left wholly. In other words, slavery leads to the loss of some part of somebody. The literal loss of the arm that Dana experiences points to the effect that slavery had on the people who were enslaved. The author, Butler, is trying to show that slavery did not leave people as whole beings. Part of them has been lost through enslavement. In this regard, Butler uses character Dana to point to this effect. Similarly, in the novel, Dana has been exposed to slavery throughout. In the reality world of slavery, the slaves were left fragmented by the torture of the slave masters. For Butler to achieve her goal in regard to the theme of slavery, she had to leave Dana with a physical defect.
