It is about the Getty Center in Los Angeles.

Part 1 (50 points): In 1 page, describe the museum, focusing on its design, architecture and collection overall. Looking at a map will help you with this section. Some aspects you might consider include, but are not limited to:

what is the museum space like as a whole? how does this space relate to the art? what is the size of the museum, and how might this affect your experience?

what periods and nationalities are present in the collection? what’s missing?

how much of the collection is devoted to ancient civilizations? The Middle Ages?

in general, what is the quality of the ancient and medieval collections, and do they represent a broad scope? In other words, are the works on display representative of what we’ve been discussing in class?

Head to the North Pavilion…

Part 2 (50 points): In 1 page, discuss the layout and experience of the medieval galleries (both floors) at the Getty Center in the North Pavilion. Some questions you might consider, but are not limited to:

What do they include or omit?

What mood does the museum create, and how?

What is your experience of the rooms based on wall colors, number of artworks, wall text, music (or lack thereof), etc.?

What impression do you get from these galleries or exhibitions?

What historical events, literature, religious ideas, etc., are represented by this collection?

Part 3 (50 points): In 1.5 pages, compare two medieval artworks (i have written a the discribtion of the 2 medieval art works in the bottom) from different regions or countries, but completed at approximately the same time (+ or – 25 years). Compare them in terms of subject, style, composition, color, technique, materials, and anything else you can think of that is relevant. What does this comparison reveal about geographic differences in art from this time? Use specific details in both works to support your ideas.

Part 4 (50 points): Find a medieval artwork that you like that is different from any example discussed above. In 1 page, discuss its appearance (subject, style, composition, color, etc.), as well as why it appeals to you most. Does it relate to anything we’ve discussed in class or read for class? IF you are completing this assignment BEFORE we turn to the medieval period, you should read ahead in the textbook.

The two artworks are:

Christ on the Cross, with Saints Mary, John the Evangelist, and Catherine of Siena About 1570 Marco Pino Italian, Siena before 1520-1587/88 Naples Oil on panel In this visionary image, Saint Catherine (lower right) witnesses the Crucifixion taking place high in the mountains. Pino’s sculptural treatment of the figures lends the vision reality; his placement of the scene above an expansive landscape emphasizes the universal significance of Christ’s sacrifice. The pictorial clarity, vivid color, and mystical subject reflect the stylistic and religious impulses of the intense spiritual environment of southern Italy 73 PB 140

The Crucifixion French (Lorraine/Burgundy), about 1500-1510 colorless, and flashed glass, oxide paint, and silver stain; lead came (framing strips) The production of large-scale stained-glass win- dows for churches flourished in Europe during the Renaissance. This monumental example, along with the panel at far right, probably once decorated a chapel. Both are from a trio of windows in which the Crucifixion was in the center. The third is now lost.
