Assignment instructions
Is drug/alcohol addiction a disease? Use published literature and empirical research to support your answer/argument.
The essay should seek to construct a persuasive argument based upon a selection of key evidence, rather than offer a general description of facts. The essay question is deliberately broad and there is no “right” or “wrong” answer. You need to come up with the answer yourself, based on your evaluation of published empirical research/literature in the field, and then sell your answer to the marker by way of a strong argument based on this pool of literature. Quality of essays will be judged on the integration of evidence into a persuasive and clear argument, adequate description of cited research/literature, and definition of key terms/concepts (i.e. it is important to define addiction, disease, and other concepts that are key to your argument).
There are many ways to approach this essay and there is a broad range of possible answers. So, you must choose your literature and research wisely. You may decide to focus on addiction in general, or a select a specific addiction to focus on (i.e. alcohol or specific drugs such as nicotine, cocaine, etc), this is entirely up to you, either approach is fine, but you should make it clear to your marker what approach you are taking.
