Presentation Requirement:

As part of the assessment for this module you are required to make a presentation as part of a group, this represents 50% of the module mark.

Groups
Groups will consist of a maximum of six people and must be formed by week four at the very latest.  Any students not in a group will be put together to form one. Previous experience suggests that groups with a range of pathways, nationalities and a mixture of male/female are able to call upon a greater range of abilities for this exercise. Your group should meet regularly to participate in the Portfolio Game to comply with the strict regulatory requirements – it is suggested that you regularly consider and discuss your ideas for the presentation and must keep a record of each meeting in the form of minutes.

If there are any problems within the groups you should firstly try to resolve them yourselves, if this fails then make an appointment to discuss it with John English the module leader.  Peer review of the assessment will be available to any group that requests it otherwise all group members will receive the same mark.

Dates
Presentations will take place in the last two weeks of term two and will be organised after the Xmas break once you have had the opportunity to watch and consider 2 x DVDs of previous A-graded presentations from previous years.

Theories and research
For the presentations I expect you to discuss and explain relevant theories and to back up your discussion with academic references.  I suggest that if you have not done so yet you explore Summon on the library computer system. You must cite from academic refereed journals.

The actual presentation
Your presentation should last between 17 and 22 minutes.
You will be stopped and not allowed to continue if you reach 22 minutes.
A question and answer session will follow the presentation lasting up to 15 minutes.
Some form of visual aids should be used, PowerPoint will be available.
You must produce a group handout of your presentation which should include useful supporting material that adds value to your presentation; these should incorporate consideration of the individual’s personal development whilst participating in the learning experience provided by the “Portfolio Game” as a minimum.

You will receive your mark and written feedback within three weeks of the presentation date, however every effort will be made to give this sooner as Google Documents will be used to capture the data at the time of the assessment.  This may be delayed if a group decide they want to peer review assessment mark.

Topics
Presentation topics are to be determined by each group although experience suggests that most teams at this level perform better when they create a role play scenario using the learning experiences that are gained by their active involvement in the “Portfolio Game” as demonstrated by the two DVDs that will be shown during the early tutorials in term two.

At various times during term two you will be asked to discuss your presentation ideas with the tutor and appropriate guidance will be offered at that time. At any time a group can decide to produce a more traditional “academic” style presentation based on a suitable question which must be approved by the module leader/tutor.

A proportion of marks between 5/10% will be determined from a number of innovative practices that have been developed to enhance your personal development, employability and potential final presentation mark. Credit will be given for:-

1.    Completing an initial, interim and final review of your employability competences that will be used to support your presentation.
2.    Completing a number of formative presentations during the module tutorial sessions, these will be used as formative exercises to develop and enhance your presentation skills for this assignment.
3.    Completing a number of peer reviews of the formative presentations delivered by the other teams within your tutorial group. These reviews will provide feedback to the presenting team and to allow the reviewer to become more critically aware of the requirements for the final presentation by comparing and contrasting these tutorial presentations and also participating in the question and answer sessions that follow each formative presentation.

You are advised to:

•    Avoid mere description of the content of material referred to – critical evaluation is required where specified
•    Read widely from textbooks, journals and authoritative financial press commentaries in forming your views.
•    Pay close attention to the Assessment Criteria at the end of this document – this lists the specific criteria to the requirements of this assignment.  These specific criteria will be used to provide feedback on your marked assignment.
•    Use the new APA 6th referencing guide – badly referenced material will lose you marks (make sure you consult the Learning Development Group Tutors (BS building level 1) for any additional help needed)
•    Do not exceed the time limit (22 minutes); you will be stopped at 22minutes and will therefore only be marked on your presentation up to that point
•    Be fully prepared for the question and answer session that immediately follows your presentation that will last 15 minutes

Time Limit:    35 minutes maximum, you will be stopped at 22 minutes for your presentation to allow for the Q and A session.

Submission Date:
Last two weeks of term two. Feedback will be given within three weeks if not sooner

Time:    Presentation times will be agreed during tutorials and will be displayed during the lectures in term two.
