INTRODUCTION TO ETHICS: WEEKS 1-3 (HOW GOOD PEOPLE MAKE TOUGH CHOICES)

Please answer Questions listed below: Weeks 1-3 (How Good People Make Tough Choices) How Good People Make Tough Choices by Rushworth M. Kidder is one of the most important texts in the course because it will provide you with basic concepts, definitions, and ethical vocabulary that can help you get started not only thinking about ethics in general, but also brainstorming and formulating a well-reasoned project for the term. You are required to read the entire book within the first two weeks of the term. (Try to read at least the first half during Week 1.) Pay particular attention to how Kidder distinguishes between a genuine Ethical Dilemma and a Moral Temptation. He also introduces what he calls dilemma paradigms, the really tough choices that center around ‘right vs right’ values (i.e. individual versus community). You should also note the ethical frameworks he introduces, as they are the most common ways in which we organize, ponder, and weigh our ethical decisions. It appears that Ends-based, Rules-based, Character-based, and Care-based ethical frameworks inform our justifications and arguments, whether we can articulate them or not. The more you learn to identify and use them during online discussions and in your own individual work, they better you will become at understanding how they work and why they are so useful. Kidder also uses many everyday examples in his work, this should help you understand how the frameworks are used by ordinary people, not just philosophers. Use this discussion space to work together to understand Kidder’s main points, concepts, and arguments. What are his main points? Can you explain them in your own words? How does he support his main points? What concepts does he introduce and how might they help us? *To access this book follow this link: https://www.amazon.com/cloudreader
