This “default” report (compared to the Alternative Report information – please see below) is expected to be comprehensive, well organised, and presented to a very high standard of writing and referencing. Your report should critically analyse the organisation in terms of management and human relations practices by addressing both practical and where applicable theoretical concepts. It is important to get started early in order to research and complete the report on time. To help get you started with the report you should consider some or all of the following issues (although not exhaustive) and where relevant apply theory to these issues (you could “cherry pick” these issues if your placement is in the Public Sector and ask your convener for more specific direction):

· The business and its legal type. Discuss why the owner/s originally went into business and why its legal form was chosen. What forms of local support were/are available to this particular business?

· Ownership – did the owner purchase/inherit an existing business or did he/she start up a new business? Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of starting up an existing business compared to purchasing an existing one. (nb feedback from the owner may be useful in answering this section).

· The typical customer. How does the business reach its customers? How does it get the word out about itself and what it offers? Use a marketing theory to assist you

· Reason customers buy the product or service? Is there more than one reason? What benefits do customers want?

· Human relations issues – using relevant HR theory/ies and apply these to your organisation

· Management styles and issues – incorporate relevant management theory/ies and critically analyse these from both points of view – ie from theory and your experiences.

· Identify and describe say at least three things that you didn’t like about this business/agency and identify how you think these could be improved.

· Reflect on what you have learnt in the “real world”.

SPECIAL ALTERNATIVE REPORT AVAILABLE: As an alternative to this “default” report above a specific project relating to your study can be discussed with your unit convener should this be more applicable to your specific internship placement (eg Cooma Internship students; Law; Politics; Strategic Studies; Finance (NAB Internship) Urban & Regional Planning students; Building & Construction etc).
