Chapter 8 Questions
1.) Given what you know about the history of intercollegiate athletics, explain why college (a) administrators, and (b) faculty members have developed their specific views on athletics.
2.) The NCAA is a non-profit organization and a multimillion-dollar enterprise. Explain how this is possible. Additionally, visit www.ncaa.org and www.ncaa.com. Why are there two separate websites? Be sure to compare and contrast the two websites when answering the question.
3.) Explain the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate (APR). Do you think that this policy is fair given the fact that is a cookie-cutter policy that all colleges must abide by when all colleges are not equal in terms of their academics? For example, it is probably fair to say that it would be more difficult for Harvard University to maintain their APR status than it would be for Towson University. Does this mean that the APR creates a competitive advantage for the less academically rigorous universities?
4.) The case study at the conclusion of Chapter 8 reads as follows:
“You are the Athletic Director at Big State University. It has been reported in the nearest large newspaper, The Elkhart Truth, that your standout shooting guard, Billy Dover, a native of Elkhart, has been receiving cash and gifts from at least one agent during the past season, and maybe even during his sophomore year. He has been seen driving around campus in a brand new Lincoln Navigator and wearing expensive looking gold jewelry, and you know for a fact that neither he nor his family could have ever purchased these items. Your high profile coach, John Beecher, has visions of making his mark so he can coach in the NBA someday soon, and he guided the Dover-led team to the Final Four, where they lost in the semifinal game.”
“This afternoon, a press conference is scheduled where you will have to face members of the press and comment on the allegations.”
As the Athletics Director of Big State University, what is the message you will deliver in your press conference? Be sure to defend your answer.
