1. 1- This is a unique assignment designed for this semester’s course. If you have reviewed responses to previous final assignments (from other sections, previous years, etc.), they will not be accepted (and this will have a detrimental effect on your course grade.)
2. 2- You are responsible for researching ALL FIVE (5) of the following questions/prompts for Take Home Assignment #3.
3. 3- This IS your final assignment in the course, and unlike the previous Take-Home Assignments and Essay Collections, it is your job alone to convince me to give you a passing grade for the course. You may consult with other students, professors, or the internet, but you are being evaluated individually. Duplicate responses from independent students will be considered plagiarism and cause for academic action.
4. 4- There is no minimum/maximum word limit for any of the responses. Make sure that you express complete thoughts. Use references and citations where appropriate.
5. 5- I WILL NOT accept e-mails for this Assignment. You MUST present me with a COMPLETE paper copy of your responses IN CLASS (18:00; 6:00 PM) on Tuesday, 15 December 2015. Papers turned in after that time (or e-mailed to me) WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED; There are NO EXCEPTIONS.

One of the central ideas in the course is that there are a set of “rules” for the game of science. Drawing from what you have learned about Biology, in this course, this semester, choose ONE very specific item that demonstrates each of the rules and explain HOW it demonstrates that rule. (If it was not discussed this semester, you will not receive credit) If it demonstrates multiple rules, you may only use it to exemplify ONE rule!
A- Empiricism- B- Uniformity- C- Repeatability- D- Falsifiability- E- Causality-
F- Simplicity-

The “unraveling” of the nature and function of Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) was to Biology. At the conclusion of Watson and Crick’s 1952 paper in Nature, they say,“ It has not escaped our notice that the specific pairing we have postulated immediately suggests a possible copying mechanism for the genetic material.”
A- What is that copying mechanism that it “immediately suggests”,
B- What is the significance of that copying mechanism, and
C- How does the copying mechanism speak to the process of science?

Water is the single-most important indicator of life in the universe and plays a major role in all living things. In grade school, you learn the watercycle (precipitation, percolation, evaporation/transpiration, condensation), but this is not grade school and this is a biology class, so, after researching,
A. Follow a drop of water from the time it enters an animal’s body to the time it leaves. How and where is it used? What functions does it play in metabolism? OR
B. Follow the political life of a drop of water. Choose a country and
1. Identify what happens to a drop of water from the time it is
captured , either from rainfall or from groundwater,
2. research how it is regulated,
3. how/whom can “own” water, and
4. how it is protected by laws.
4-
Stephen J. Gould called Darwin’s theory of Natural Selection “the most discombobulating idea in all of mankind”, and Daniel C. Bennett called it “Darwin’s Dangerous Idea”. From what you have learned this semester,
1. A- Clearly describe Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection (How does it work),
2. B- Clearly explain how it differed from other ideas at the time (i.e., why is it
“discombobulating”), and
3. C- How does it change the “worldview” of scientists? (Hint: READ Darwin
for Beginners!]

As stated by V.P.Gore in his “Inconvenient Truth” lecture. Global Climate Change (=global warming aka groble raming) is a very real phenomenon resulting from excess generation of greenhouse gasses. He demonstrated that this is a global issue that causes, both flooding and drought, equatorial cooling and polar warming. For this “research” question,
1. A- What is the evidence that human activity is resulting in the increase of the greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere?
2. B- State the city, state (province) and country (if not the U.S.A.) where your family lives and/or you were raised,
3. C- Identify two (2) environmental issues that are local to your home of origin and how/ whether or not your local and/or state/provincial/federal government is doing anything to address these issues.
For question number 5 my country is Kuwait.
