Information Competence & Annotated Bibliography

L. Riccomini

University 100

Information Competence  (Annotated Bibliography) and Collaborative Project

This assignment is worth a total of 20 points-that’s a huge part of your U100 grade! Wow!

Purpose

Information Competence & Annotated Bibliography: Our purpose is to give you an opportunity to individually and collaboratively research an issue that you have discovered from your Garbology reading. Your fabulous librarian and I want you to critically think more about the scope of an issue. Then we want you to practice presenting your findings like an academic—in the form of an annotated bibliography. Constructing a solid annotated bibliography in your freshman year is truly an impressive thing!

Task

In small groups, you will brainstorm topics related to issues raised in Garbology. We will work on this in class. Once you have settled on a topic, you will work research the topic, narrow your scope, share your research and create public service announcements (PSA) to share with the class.

OUTLINE OF ASSIGNMENTS:

I:         PRE-RESEARCH TUTORIAL ACTIVITY (Homework I)

  • See Homework I Pre-Research Activity on Moodle for instructions and due date
  • We will also meet with your fabulous librarian from the Oviatt Library two times this semester. Your attendance and participation are mandatory.

II:        INFORMATION COMPETENCE & ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

            (10 points-individually graded!)

  • Annotated Bibliography: EACH student will turn in an individual annotated bibliography based on your group’s chosen topic from Garbology

The Annotated Bibliography must contain at least 5 sources with at least

ü  1 academic/scholarly source (either from a database hosted by CSUN or a book found in the library).

ü  1 credible magazine or newspaper (can be electronically delivered through a library database).

ü  1 credible website.

Each source listed will also include a short (at least five sentences) annotation, which will describe the relevance between the information in the source and the topic of the research. The annotated bibliography should adhere to current MLA standards—we will be discussing this in more detail during the library presentation.
