The father could also be considered a protagonist, but it would be hard to argue for the theme because of the lack of background information.

Unfortunately, the indian woman giving birth can not reasonably be considered the protagonist because all the other characters dismiss her pain and suffering. This may

be a product of the time the story was written, could be a sign that Hemingway was a misogynist, or just be Hemingway’s push for truth in the telling.

€¢Nick’s father says, He’ll turn up all right, when Nick asks where Uncle George went.
