Influence is the ability to affect the behavior of others in a particular direction, whereas power is the potential or capacity to influence. Leaders are influential only when they exercise power.

A leader therefore must acquire power to influence others. A leader’s ability to lead comes from his/her ability to relate and influence those around him/her. Leadership is the ability to inspire confidence and support among the people who are needed to achieve organizational goals.
