Even so, many organizations fail to allow the time or allocate enough resources to critique or analyze things that worked, as well as things that did not. Only if this step is part of the systems approach to organizational learning can key insights be used as leverage to avoid repeating past mistakes.

After action analysis (AAA) and reporting was developed in the military in the 50s and 60s, and has long since been used in many industries to learn from previous decisions made and actions taken. The business world has come to realize the usefulness of AAA to improve their processes and thus, create a competitive advantage.
