MLC101 ASSESSMENT 1: Short Essay Information
• The short essay is worth 20% of the final mark.
• There are two (2) elements to the Short Essay Assessment; see below.
SHORT ESSAY ELEMENT 1: PLAN
Word count: 150-200 Words (no leeway)
Submission:
• The Plan MUST be completed no later than Week 4.
• You do not submit the Plan in Week 4.
• The Plan and Essay are to be submitted together as one document on
or before 11:59pm, Friday, 22 April 2016 (Week 6).
Points you MUST address:
• Issues/Key Points that you will be discussing in the Essay itself.
• Any areas that the you are finding challenging i.e. the
research/referencing component.
• Any deadlines that you have put in place for yourself i.e. you aim to have
the first draft of the essay will be finalised by week 6.
Further Information:
• The Plan is worth 3 marks.
• If a student requests an extension of time, they MUST submit their Plan
with the request. If no plan is provided, then the request will be
automatically refused.
ELEMENT 2: ESSAY
Word Count: 1300 words excluding citations, quotations, footnotes and
bibliography (10% leeway).

Research Guidelines:
• You are expected to conduct your own research on the topic. There is no
limit as to the number of resources that can be used but all material must
be sufficiently and correctly referenced.
• The textbook is not to be used as a reference.
• You must reference your essay in accordance with the Deakin Harvard
Referencing Guide – In particular, please see the ‘Legal sources’
referencing section: http://www.deakin.edu.au/students/studysupport/
referencing/harvard
• A bibliography must be provided.
FURTHER INFORMATION:
• The Essay is worth 17 marks.
• The Essay must have an introduction and conclusion.
• It should be typed and presented in a professional manner. The typed
assignment MUST only be in ‘WORD’ format (no pdf or any other format).
Assignments submitted in another format WILL NOT be marked and
allocated a mark of ZERO.

o Margins – 2.54cm (all sides)
o There should be a title page and it must include:
a. your name and student number
b. word count
• The submission area will open one (1) week before the due date.
• All assignments MUST BE submitted to CloudDeakin Dropbox. Email,
faxes, and hardcopy submissions will not be accepted.
• Please refer to the Marking Rubric to ensure you follow the guidelines
carefully to avoid losing marks for unnecessary mistakes and omissions.
The mark will reflect an assessment of style, structure and content.
