Essay Question: You are a museum curator who is putting together an exhibit on the development of world systems in early world history. In putting together the exhibit, you have been able to procure some amazing primary sources: the original diaries of Marco Polo discussing his travels along the Silk Roads, Ibn Battuta discussing his travels within the Islamic world-system, Zheng He discussing his voyages throughout the Indian Ocean, and Christopher Columbus discussing his voyages across the Atlantic. In a 4-part essay, write what each of these men would have said about their lives, their travels, and the world-systems that made these travels possible. In doing so, you would want to write about the history of how and why those world systems developed and what they consisted of. You would also want to discuss some of the consequences of the exchanges that took place within these world systems. In writing the essay be sure to think about the role of empire, religion, education, trade, and technological innovation that allowed these world-systems to develop. In the 4 parts of the essay, write as if you are these people, using the first person (I, me, my, etc.), to record what they would have written in their diaries.
