In this assignment, I want us to evaluate how a single document can be interpreted differently depending on the perspective of the researcher or the kind of argument the researcher wants to emphasize. Understanding how documents are interpreted or misinterpreted, and how a researcher’s agenda or ideology might impact what they see in a document, should help reinforce our critical reading skills, which I believe is crucial in all intellectual engagements. Please follow the instructions carefully. I designed the assignment in this format so as to make it easier for you to achieve the intended objective. Consequently, I encourage you to send me emails immediately if you needed some clarification.
General Instructions:
Please read the entire instructions carefully before you start writing.
(a) No references are required for this assignment, but provide page number (e.g. p. 2)
(b) The paper should be 3 pages long, double-spaced. A few lines more or less of the
required length will not be penalized but do not over-write.
(c) Use 12 points font only.
(d) Include a cover page with your name, title of the paper, and instructor’s name. The cover
page will not count toward the page requirements. Do not begin your paper on the cover-
page.
(e) The paper must be in narrative form. Papers written in bullet points will be rejected.
(f) Check your grammar and spellings. Your grade will be determined by both content and
style (grammar, organization, word choices, a limited number of passive voices, and clarity of your argument). If you expect an A in this assignment your paper must be clean and professional, in addition to other requirements such as submitting your work before the deadline. If you feel you cannot meet the deadline let us know. We will give you an

extension with the understanding that, to be fair to your colleagues, you will lose some
points based on how long it takes to submit it.
(g) Do not attempt to download anything from the internet as this will be detected and
reported to the appropriate authorities as required by University regulations. If you are having difficulties or something is unclear to you, CONTACT US BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THE ASSIGNMENT.
Specific Instructions
(i) Read the article, “The Aba Women’s Riot in Nigeria,” carefully.
(ii) In about half a page write a short introduction summarizing the content of the article
and stating your arguments or thesis. Note that it may be better to write the
introduction and conclusion last. But feel free to do what you are comfortable with.
(iii) In one page only, use relevant information from the document to argue that, “This
historical document demonstrates that prior to colonial rule, women in Eastern Nigeria were not dominated by men, they enjoyed economic freedom, and their culture allowed them to protect their interests against dominant authorities even if that meant resorting to armed rebellion to demand to protect their interests.”
(iv) In another page only, use relevant information from the article to argue that, “During the precolonial period, Eastern Nigerian societies were dominated by men and the women were completely powerless in this patriarchal society.”
(v) Watch the short documentary by the novelist, Chimamanda Adichie, “The Danger of a Single Story.” [See the link below but feel free to google for a better link].
(vi) In about half a page, write a conclusion assessing (a) which of the two arguments is supported by ample evidence from the document; (b) what you learned from the exercise and how the Adichie’s documentary helped you to reflect on the historical event.
(vii) Edit your work thoroughly.
(viii) Ensure that your paper does not exceed 3 pages, although a few lines over 3 pages or
below 3 pages is acceptable.
