Background: ManyAmericansliketoimaginethehistoryoftheirnationasoneofcontinualprogress. Whileacknowledgingthatnotallpersonsandgroupsenjoyedequalrightsatalltimes, AmericansoftentakeitforgrantedthatAmericanhistorymovesinonlyonedirection: towardgreaterrights, greaterfreedom, andgreaterequality. However, fromroughly 1867 to 1875, AfricanAmericansenjoyedfarmorepoliticalinfluenceandequalrightsthantheyeverhadbefore, oreverwouldagain, untiltheendofthemodernCivilRightsMovementalmost a centurylater. Inadditiontothedisturbanceinthesocialhierarchycreatedbytheendofslavery, thenationexperiencedtheinfluxofhugenumbersofimmigrantsduringthelasthalfofthe 1800s, manyofwhomwereviewedbytheAmericanpopulationasdifferentandinferiortoearlierwavesofimmigrants.
