Heat Capacity
Materials needed for this lab
The following materials will be needed for this lab:
Styrofoam cups
Kitchen scale capable of measuring in grams or kilograms
Digital meat thermometer
Introduction and Objectives
Thermodynamics is the branch of physics that deals with the movement of energy in a complex system. Heat flows in the system subject to two basic laws: The First Law of Thermodynamics and the Second Law of Thermodynamics. In this lab we will be looking a piece of the First Law of thermodynamics, the amount of internal energy stored in a material and its temperature. We will do this experiment using a microwave oven because it is the most controllable heat source that is readily available in your home.
Learning Objectives
The learning objectives for this lab are:
Understand how heat flows into and out of an object
Understand the idea of heat capacity and specific heat
Understand the relationship between the temperature of a material and the internal energy.
